Most people switch off the aircon, lock the door, and forget about it. That’s fine for a few days. But if you’re leaving for a week or more, Johor’s humidity doesn’t stop just because you’re not home.
With no airflow circulating through your unit, moisture builds up inside the system. Dust and debris that were already sitting in your filters start getting damp. Mould and mildew can develop inside the evaporator coil. And if your drainage tray had a slow drip issue you hadn’t noticed yet, it could overflow while you’re away.
None of that is dramatic on its own. But it means your unit works harder when you turn it back on, smells musty for days, and might show signs of a leak you didn’t expect. Getting ahead of it takes about an hour before you leave.
Worth knowing: If your aircon has been due for a service and you’ve been putting it off, right before a holiday is actually the best time to get it done. You leave with a clean unit, and it’s already sorted when you get back.
What to Do Before You Go
You don’t need to do everything on this list. But the more of these you cover, the better your aircon will be when you return.
Get a Professional Service Done
If it’s been more than six months since your last service, book one before your trip. A technician will clean the filters, check the gas pressure, inspect the drainage tray, and flag anything that looks like it could turn into a problem. You leave knowing your unit is clean and in good shape. This is the single most useful thing you can do.
Clean or Replace the Air Filters
If you’re not booking a full service, at least pull out the filters and clean them yourself. Dusty filters left sitting in humidity breed mould faster than you’d expect. Rinse them under running water, let them dry completely before putting them back, and you’re good to go.
Check the Drainage Tray and Pipe
A clogged drain is the most common reason for aircon water leaks. If you’ve noticed any dripping near the indoor unit recently, get it checked before you leave. A drainage tray that overflows while the house is empty can cause ceiling stains, water damage, and a mess you don’t want to come home to.
Run the Fan-Only Mode for 30 Minutes
Before you switch the unit off completely, run it in fan-only mode for 20 to 30 minutes. This dries out the internal components and reduces moisture inside the coil. It’s a simple step that significantly cuts down on mould growth while the unit is sitting idle.
Turn Off the Unit and the Isolator Switch
Once the fan mode has run, switch the unit off at the remote, then turn off the isolator switch on the wall nearby. This cuts power to the outdoor compressor unit entirely. It protects the system from power surges while you’re away and saves you on electricity at the same time.
Leave a Bit of Ventilation in the Room
Completely sealed rooms trap humidity. If you have a window that can be left slightly open or a ceiling fan you’re comfortable leaving on a low setting, it helps reduce moisture buildup around the aircon unit. Not always practical, but worth it when you can.
Quick Checklist Before You Lock Up
- Filters cleaned or a professional service booked
- Drainage tray checked — no sign of dripping or blockage
- Fan-only mode run for at least 20 minutes before shutdown
- Remote used to power off the unit properly
- Isolator switch turned off at the wall
- No visible leaks or water stains around the indoor unit
- Unusual noises dealt with before leaving, not left for “later”
When You Get Back Home
Don’t just turn everything on the moment you walk through the door. Give it a minute.
Turn the isolator switch back on first. Wait a couple of minutes before switching on the aircon at the remote. This gives the compressor capacitors time to recover from being off, which reduces strain on startup.
When it comes on, notice if it smells musty. A little staleness is normal after a week or two. If the smell doesn’t clear within 30 to 60 minutes of running, that’s a sign you’ve got some mould growth inside the coil that needs a chemical wash.
Also check for any drips or water around the indoor unit within the first 30 minutes of running. If it starts leaking shortly after you switch it on, the drain is blocked and needs to be cleared.
If it’s not cooling well: Low gas is the most likely cause after a period of sitting idle, especially if there was a small leak you hadn’t noticed. Don’t wait it out hoping it gets better. Gas doesn’t refill itself and the problem only gets harder on the compressor the longer you run it low.
